Malaria
Problem
Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It is preventable and curable.
- In 2018, there were an estimated 228 million cases of malaria worldwide.
- The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 405000 in 2018.
- India accounts for 4% of global burden
- Children aged under 5 years are the most vulnerable group affected by malaria; in 2018, they accounted for 67% (272 000) of all malaria deaths worldwide
What We Do
Increasing investments to end malaria will save millions of more lives, mostly pregnant women and children in India. However, despite tremendous progress, malaria remains one of the top killers of children under five and is a major cause of poverty and inequity in India. Surveillance and response systems can identify and track the transmission of other fast-moving infectious diseases.
- Rapid diagnostics and better treatments address the growing threat of resistance to anti-malarial drugs and insecticides.
- Health care workers trained to diagnose and treat malaria also fight other diseases and can respond quickly to an emerging epidemic.
Goal
Malaria keeps families and communities from prospering. By sustaining investments in ending malaria and improving health, we can unlock economic growth and human potential.
