Diarrhoeal Diseases
Problem
Globally, diarrhoeal diseases are the second leading cause of death among children under five, even with the existence of preventive measures, such as oral rehydration solutions (ORS) and zinc supplements as general treatments. Many different bacteria, viruses and other pathogens can cause diarrhoeal disease.
Children are dying for lack of basic healthcare knowledge among citizens and health workers, and this is especially true of children with diarrhoea.
- Each year diarrhoea kills around 525000 children under five.
- A significant proportion of diarrhoeal disease can be prevented through safe drinking-water and adequate sanitation and hygiene.
- Globally, there are nearly 1.7 billion cases of childhood diarrhoeal disease every year.
- Diarrhoea is a leading cause of malnutrition in children under five years old.
